I do feel moderately jolly this morning... probably because we are headed to Miami on Thursday. Going to Miami is a benefit of periodically making our way onto Harry's agenda. He will be in South Beach partying like a rock star and we will see him briefly each evening when he awakes to play with the children, before heading out to vanquish South Beach. It's fun for everyone.
Poor Karin is going to have to endure two longish flights each way. It is becoming even more unpleasant for her to fly. We all know what's wrong with flying... long lines, intrusive security, packed planes, unsanitary conditions, crappy air, hostile flight attendants, no food... I could go on. The point is, that it's significantly worse for Karin with her aches and pains and sensitivities to odors and light and omni-present nausea.
In other news, we have to send a demand letter to our landlord. If you look back to the September posts in this blog, you will see a bit about that issue. We did vacate on September 28 of this year but our landlord has yet to return our security deposit. I have been holding off sending the demand letter because I wanted to give him the benefit of the doubt. Time is up, however.
I had drafted a legal letter to him last week. When I showed it to Karin, her response was, "That's harsh." So I scripted a more friendly and cheery demand letter to him. Now K thinks that perhaps we should wait until after the holidays so as not to intrude on his family time. I'm more inclined to send the "harsh" letter now. However, I'm willing to listen to reason. MaƮtre James,
ReplyDeleteHere is my opinion.
A demand letter is meant to be harsh. The landlord needs to feel threatened to perform his obligation. I think you have already been nice and patient, James. It has been almost 3 months since you have vacated the premises so no more mister nice guy (although I tend to be the nice guy too often but now I try to be careful so people don't take avantage and walk all over me).
I say send the culprit the letter now. A harsh one while still remaining polite. If he does not return your deposit by _, action will be taken.
He has caused you and Kar stress since the summer so it is now time to act and give him something to think about.
In addition, the landloard will probably have more disposable income now as opposed to in January if we consider vacation expenses and gift purchases.
Let me know. Happy Hanuka and enjoy FLA!
I don't know the whole history and I'm not going to look it up. But start with nice and then get nasty ... if you have already done the nice requests then pull the trigger. If not give him one last chance.
ReplyDeleteBeing nice almost always the proper way to live your life. 90% of the time it is the best way to get what you want and 100% of the time it gives you a happier healthier life.
My landlord just tried to hike my rent 75%. I didn't say "f*ck off! you can't do that." I smiled and said I guess I have to move (also because I know they actually could rent my place out for double what I pay).
As I looked for new place my landlord came back to me and said they'd led me have another year at almost my current rate (because i'm nice.)
