Sleeping Through The Night

The trip to Montreal had completely destroyed any progress that we had made in APL's sleep department. While we were there he was waking up multiple times during the night. And upon our return, he continued to do so.

A week and a half ago, Karin and I decided that it was time to help him remember that he had been able to sleep for longer periods of time. Last Monday, he woke up at around 2:00 AM. Karin went to his room but did not offer him a bottle. Instead, she patted him and then sat in the room as he began to cry. She stayed there for 25 minutes, with him crying just a few feet from her, until he fell asleep again. He then slept until 5:30, at which point I fed him.

The following night at about 2:30 AM Karin once again went to APL's room and sat nearby as he cried and complained. It was pure torture for her. I tried to convince her that there was no need to watch him cry. She could go check on him to make sure he was comfortable but torturing herself by watching him cry was not helping anyone. The next night APL woke up, and began crying. Karin went to check on him and then came back. He cried for 15 minutes and then fell asleep.

And that was the last time that he cried before 5:00 AM. Since then he has been sleeping until almost 6:00 AM. On occasion he sleeps past 6:00 AM. It's a wonderful thing... particularly since K has now started working again.

I don't think K ended up being excited about returning to work. Early on in APL's life she said she could use the break... But now that he's sleeping through the night and he's fun and smiley and interactive, it's tough.

In other news, APL has started eating solid foods. By solid foods, I mean something that was once solid that is then either pulverized, or boiled and pulverized, until it is mushy enough to be drunk through a straw. He has had apples, yams, pears, and, his greatest foray into the unknown... avocado. Here is the avocado eating video, which is going to expire in a few days. He didn't like it at all. But he ate it!
